Designer Gold Supports The Prouty
Again this year, Designer Gold is proud to support The Prouty by closing its gallery and studio on Saturday, July 11, to allow all its staff to participate in The Prouty. Supporting The Prouty is the very best way we know to fight cancer.
For those who are unfamiliar with The Prouty -- it is an enormous event that draws over 5,000 participants from all over the region who will cycle, walk, row, or play golf to raise money for the Norris Cotton Cancer Center at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, a leading cancer research and care facility in Lebanon, NH. Last year, alone, The Prouty raised more than $3 million dollars. To pull off this size event, more than 1,300 volunteers and 130 corporate sponsors are needed.
The history: in 1982, Audrey Prouty lost her 9-year battle with ovarian cancer. Four of her nurses, inspired by her courage, rode their bicycles in her honor 100 miles through the White Mountains of NH to raise money and awareness for cancer research. They raised $4,000 on that first Prouty. Since then, every year The Prouty has increased in size, from 4 to over 5,000 participants, and in scope, from cycling to include walking, rowing and playing golf. The money raised goes directly to research and patient care: more than 87 cents on every dollar donated!
The bad news is that all of our lives been touched by this malevolent disease, cancer. The good news is that more and more people are living normal lives having survived it. That's because of the amazing research and discoveries that are happening all over this country -- a part of which are happening right here in our backyard.
And there's still time to donate by going to the Prouty website, click on the orange button "Donate." Although you can choose an individual, team or general donation, we, of course, would love to have you donate to one or more members of our Designer Gold staff. Just type in our name(s) on the Donate page and follow the instructions.
Louisa Berky, Ruthie Murray, and Orin Pacht will walk a variety of distances.
Peggy Sadler and Paul Gross will row their single sculls 20 miles!
Finally, The Prouty is one of the biggest community parties that we know about. It's fun and challenging and gratifying. Join us if you can.
