"FASCINATING FACTS" about September's birthstone: the SAPPHIRE

*You may not know it but sapphires are formed out of Corundum the second hardest natural gemstone and come in every color of the rainbow.

*The Ancient Greeks believed Prometheus stole the sapphire and gave it to man as protection when traveling.

*Ancient Persians believe the sky was blue because it was a reflection of the giant sapphire on which the earth sat.

*Early Christians said the original 10 commandments handed to Moses by God was carved into a sapphire.

*Medieval  church officials wore sapphire rings as a sign of purity of purpose and deed.

*Sapphires have been used through the ages to cure--poison, eye disease, cancer, mental illness, burns, inflammation, Headaches, nightmares, colic, rheumatism, and licking a sapphire will "expel the harmful juices that affect the brain."

Sapphires offer enlightenment, inner peace, wisdom, foretell the future, and will refuse to shine if worn by someone evil.

*The largest sapphire was found in Madagascar in 1995.  It weighed 90,000 carats and has 134 pictures carved  into it depicting man's greatest achievements.

Today the Sapphire is one of the most popular engagement stones representing a promise of loyalty, sincerity and trust.  It is also used as a gift for the 5th, 23rd and 45th wedding anniversary
